What is a serigraph?

A serigraph or a sericel is a print made using the silk-screen process to transfer an image onto paper or acetate.

However the serigraphs you'll find in our collection are prints based off of hand painted cels that were primarily used in the production of early frame by frame animations. From the drawing board characters are then painted onto clear sheets of plastic. These outlines were then painted from behind to fill in the colors of the characters These painted cels are then finally laid over a background.

For example in this sericel Wile E. Coyote, Roadrunner, and the spring mechanism (all animated aspects of the scene) have been painted onto a sheet that is laid overtop the background.

What is a Giclee?

Giclees (pronounced "zhee-clays") are high-quality fine art prints created using advanced inkjet printing technology. They use archival-grade inks and acid-free paper or canvas to produce prints with exceptional detail, color accuracy, and longevity. Unlike standard prints, giclees replicate the texture, vibrancy, and tonal range of the original artwork, making them a preferred choice for artists and collectors alike. Giclees offer a true testament to the original piece’s beauty while maintaining a museum-quality standard, adding authenticity and value to each print.
